Avomine contains Promethazine, which is an antihistamine. Its qualities as an antihistamine means that it has the ability to prevent particular chemicals that form part of the body's immune responses, from influencing particular receptors in the brain. These receptors are also what can trigger symptoms such as nausea or vomiting. By blocking these receptors, messages from the vestibular system can't be relayed and therefore you won't start to experience all the usual uncomfortable symptoms that result from travel by sea, air or plane, if you are prone to them.
Avomine is a safe treatment that can be taken by most patients, however there are some precautions. When taking it you should avoid operating heavy machinery and your ability to drive safely may be inhibited slightly. It's also not advised to continue taking this treatment for longer than seven days at a time without speaking to your doctor. You should also be aware that promethazine can influence the results of pregnancy tests, resulting in either a false positive or negative.
Avomine is ideal to use for long journeys as well as journeys that are shorter than seven days. To ensure that it works as a preventative, you should start taking it a day before you travel, if your journey is going to last a few days. However, if your journey isn't likely to last more than a few hours, you can simply take the tablet an hour or two before you travel. If you didn't have time to prepare and you are taking this to alleviate symptoms that have already started then you should take a tablet as soon as possible, a second tablet that evening and a third the following evening, although this will be dependent on the duration of your trip and you may not need to take more than one tablet.
Most medications carry with them, to a greater or lesser extent, a risk of side effects. In the case of Avomine, the risk is extremely low and even if side effects do occur they are normally very mild and may include a feeling of drowsiness, blurred vision, a dry mouth, a loss of appetite, headaches and a drop in blood pressure. If any of the side affects you experience concern you, or you experience anything serious, medical help should be sought.
