How it works
This medication contains the active ingredient oxytetracycline dihydrate which is effective at targeting the acne-causing bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. It aims to stop the bacteria from producing by inhibiting its ability to produce proteins. If the bacteria's reproductive capabilities are impaired, the infection can't spread and cause inflammation of the sebaceous glands, allowing them to heal and skin to clear up.
Who this treatment is for
Using this medication shouldn't be a problem for most patients, although it should not be used if you are allergic to the active ingredient. Patients are also strongly discouraged from taking this antibiotic if you have long-term kidney or liver problems, you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you are taking medications such as penicillin, anticoagulants, diuretics or retinoids.
Taking Oxytetracycline tablets
It's important that this treatment is taken exactly as prescribed so that you minimize your risk of side effects. The usual recommended dose is two 250mg tablets twice a day, ideally an hour prior to or two hours after you have had a meal. These tablets should not be taken before bed and also not with milk or food of any kind as this can inhibit its effectiveness inside the body.
