This medication contains the active ingredient oxytetracycline dihydrate which is effective at targeting the acne-causing bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. It aims to stop the bacteria from producing by inhibiting its ability to produce proteins. If the bacteria's reproductive capabilities are impaired, the infection can't spread and cause inflammation of the sebaceous glands, allowing them to heal and skin to clear up.
Using this medication shouldn't be a problem for most patients, although it should not be used if you are allergic to the active ingredient. Patients are also strongly discouraged from taking this antibiotic if you have long-term kidney or liver problems, you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you are taking medications such as penicillin, anticoagulants, diuretics or retinoids.
It's important that this treatment is taken exactly as prescribed so that you minimize your risk of side effects. The usual recommended dose is two 250mg tablets twice a day, ideally an hour prior to or two hours after you have had a meal. These tablets should not be taken before bed and also not with milk or food of any kind as this can inhibit its effectiveness inside the body.
Side effects aren't a common occurrence, but if they do occur you should seek medical advice, especially if you start experiencing an allergic reaction, you experience symptoms that indicate raised pressure in the skull such as a headache or disturbed vision or if you start developing a sensitivity to sunlight.
