How Premarin works
Premarin is a type of HRT treatment that contains conjugated oestrogen, which is essentially a combination of different oestrogens that are very natural to the female body. It helps because it replaces oestrogen that is lost during menopause, restoring hormone balance to a healthy level.
Using it doesn’t just help take away symptoms such as night sweats, hot flushes, vaginal dryness and changes in sex drive, but can also prevent significant loss of bone mass that can lead to osteoporosis.
Who can take Premarin
It is available to women who have had a hysterectomy and who require relief from menopause symptoms. You may not be prescribed this treatment if you have a history of breast cancer, endometriosis and fibroids. This medication should also not be taken or taken in an adjusted dose if you are already using treatments for tuberculosis or HIV or you are taking St John’s wort or myterapone.
How to take it
Available doses of Premarin include 300mcg, 625mcg and 1.25mg dose. You’ll likely be prescribed the lowest dose to start off with, although this may be increased if you require it and you haven’t displayed any worrying side effects.
It’s a daily treatment, meaning that there is no break in between pill packs. If you have not had a hysterectomy, a doctor may prescribe an alternative treatment or additional clinical progestogen to be taken for a few days of your cycle.
The side effects of Premarin
All patients on HRT treatment should be monitored vigilantly by their doctor, but this still doesn’t mean that side effects should be a great concern, especially if you are on the right medication for you.
Common side effects may include abdominal pain, headache, nausea, nervousness, back pain, vaginal bleeding or joint pain. You may also experience spotting or changes in your sex drive. These side effects shouldn’t be lasting, but if they start to bother you, always tell a doctor.
Please note that using additional oestrogen may increase your risk of stroke, breast cancer, heart attack or blood clots, although your doctor will be keeping an eye out for any warning signs associated with these conditions.
