How Diflucan works
Fluconazole has highly effective antifungal properties allowing it to treat vaginal thrush by killing the actual Candida fungus responsible for the symptoms. It's able to do this by preventing the fungus from producing ergosterol, which is vital in the formation of fungal cell walls. If a fungus can't multiply or maintain its cell walls it dies, resulting in the infection clearing up within a few hours.
Who Diflucan is for
Diflucan is mostly recommended as a vaginal thrush treatment for women over the age of 18. However, there may be some instances where the use of it is not advisable. This is why people with liver disorders, heart disease or decreased function of the liver may not be recommended this medicine. People with low blood levels of magnesium, calcium or potassium, pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with allergies to antifungal treatments are also at an increased risk of adverse side effects.
How to take Diflucan
Diflucan comes in a 150mg tablet that is taken orally, with or without food. It can be taken at any point during the day and many women start to notice a change in their condition within 24 hours of taking this dose. Your doctor may recommend a cream treatment such as Gyno-Daktarin as well, but this is mostly in instances where infections have become recurrent or are particularly severe. If you don't notice any change in your condition, you should speak to your doctor before considering an increase to your dosage.
Diflucan side effects
The side effects of this treatment are rarely serious, particularly since the treatment is so short. The most common side effects may include nausea, an upset stomach, headaches, an unpleasant taste in your mouth or dizziness, although these aren't likely to last for very long. However, if they don't go away, become worse or you start noticing the symptoms of an allergic reaction, which may include swelling of the face, tongue or mouth, you should seek emergency medical help.
