Finacea is a topical medication that is prescribed to treat an adult skin disorder known as Rosacea. This medication contains azelaic acid which is used to redness, inflammation, pimples, and veins caused by Rosacea.

How it works

Finacea contains an active ingredient known as azelaic acid. This acid contains anti-inflammatory properties that kill the growth of bacteria that causes acne to occur and helps reduce inflammation, the appearance of red bumps, and more as a result of Rosacea.

Dosage information

Finacea comes in the topical form of 15% gel in a 30-gram tube, 20 % cream, and 15% foam. This medication is available on prescription from your doctor, and the dose can vary based on the reason you're prescribed it.

Similarly, the amount of Finacea you apply also depends on the strength of the dose. Moreover, the duration for applying the Finacea can differ depending on the type of medical problem you have.

Therefore, always follow the dosage directions according to the advice given by your doctor. You will also want to pay close attention to the directions stated on the label. Never miss a dose and if you apply more than recommended, speak to your doctor for advice.

How to use

You should always take Finacea according to how your general practitioner prescribes it. It should be applied daily to the required area, once in the morning and one in the evening.

Before applying, you should always wash your hands, clean the required area with a soap cleansing solution and pat your skin dry using a soft gel. Once dry, you should apply the gel gently to your skin and rub it in circles so it absorbs evenly. After you've applied the gel, wash your hands thoroughly.

Make sure that you do not cover your skin following the application of the gel as this may contribute to a lack of absorption, limiting its effectiveness. It's important you're consistent with your application for it to be effective. Finacea can often take up to four weeks before an improvement can be noticed.

It's important never to take more than you've been prescribed or apply double the amount for application.

Side effects

While Finacea tends to be a safe medicine to apply, consult immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • blistering
  • burning
  • dryness
  • flaking of the skin
  • a fast heartbeat
  • fever
  • irritation
  • joint pain
  • hives
  • tightness of the chest

Common side effects

Not everyone experiences side effects when taking Finacea, but the few do report:

  • dry skin
  • a rash
  • swelling
  • tingling
  • numbness and itching once the gel has been applied

If you find you're experiencing long-lasting side effects when taking Finacea, consult your doctor immediately. It could be a sign of you needing a lower dose or an alternative treatment. Finally, always read the patient list inside the medication box to know the complete list of side effects.

Before talking Finacea, you must discuss with your doctor your medical history, as you could have an underlying condition that might react with the medication. It's important not to use harsh cleaners or peeling agents when taking Finacea.

Finacea should not be applied to anyone under 18 as there's not enough scientific research or data to advocate for its safety and efficacy. You should also speak to your doctor before taking if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Plus, those who suffer from asthma sometimes report worsening symptoms when taking Finacea; if this happens to you, speak to your doctor.
