Evorel is a patch HRT treatment that supplies the body with natural oestrogen via the skin and by doing so relieves many of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with menopause. These symptoms include night sweats, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching and early onset of osteoporosis due to a loss in bone density. The active ingredient is just estradiol, which means that it should only be used by women who have had a hysterectomy already or who are using clinical progestogen.
Evorel is a transdermal patch that supplies the body with oestrogen via the skin. This compensates for the loss of hormones as a result of menopause and therefore aims to stabilise the body's internal hormonal balance, so it's as close as possible to how it was before menopause. By doing this the patches help to naturally avoid symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and vaginal itching.
These patches are intended for women who have had a hysterectomy and who are experiencing the symptoms associated with menopause. However, women who have not had a hysterectomy may also use this treatment alongside clinical progestogen.
You may not have been prescribed this treatment if you are allergic or sensitive to oestrogen, you have a history of oestrogen-dependent cancer or you are prone to blood clotting or other similar circulatory problems.
It is available in four different doses, but you'll likely be started off on the smallest dose first. The available doses include 25 mcg (releases 25 micrograms of estradiol via the skin over a 24 hour period), 50mcg (releases 50 micrograms), 75mcg (releases 75 micrograms) and 100mcg (releases 100 micrograms).
Evorel Conti or Evorel Sequi, which contain different doses as well as progestogen, are possible alternatives to the patch.
Just like any prescription treatment, HRT can cause side effects, although when you are prescribed an HRT medication, you'll be monitored carefully by your doctor to make sure that you are still getting the best from your treatment. Some of the most common side effects include irritation of the application area, breast tenderness, acne, changes in mood, heavy periods, headaches or insomnia. These side effects are mostly a sign that the body is adjusting to the new hormones, but if they persist or you experience anything more serious, you should contact your doctor.
