What is Tamiflu?
Tamiflu is a treatment for influenza, more commonly known as “the flu”. It works by helping your body recover from the flu by stopping the spread of the virus, reducing the duration of symptoms by about 2 days.
It can also be used to prevent flu if you have been in contact with someone with symptoms. However, it is not a replacement for the flu vaccine.
You start taking it within 48 hours (2 days) of symptoms appearing, which ensures it is the most effective. You take one capsule twice daily for 5 days.
How does Tamiflu work?
Oseltamivir works on an enzyme called neuraminidase, which is an enzyme that helps the influenza virus from spreading from infected cells to new ones.
Blocking this enzyme prevents the virus from spreading. This slows down the infection and stops the virus from replicating. Your immune system can therefore fight the flu virus, which reduces the duration of symptoms.
How effective is it?
Clinical trials have shown that Tamiflu is an effective treatment for flu.
One clinical trial on 374 flu patients found that it:

Who can use Tamiflu?
Most adults aged 18 and over can use Tamiflu. However, if you have a certain medical condition or take certain medications, you should check with your doctor to see if it's safe for you to use.

What dose should I take?
Tamiflu is available as 75 mg capsules. The dose for treating the flu is one 75 mg capsule twice daily for 5 days.
How do I take Tamiflu?
You must start taking Tamiflu within 2 days of flu symptoms developing. This ensures that the medicine is effective.
- Take Tamiflu twice daily, allowing 12 hours between each dose.
- Take Tamiflu for 5 days. You must complete the full course
- Take capsules with or without food. But food may help to prevent digestive side effects.
If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for it. Simply skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time.
Are there any side effects?
Like all prescription medicines, the Tamiflu pill may cause side effects. The most common side effects should go away on their own once your body gets used to the medicine.

- feeling or being sick
- sleep disorders
- vertigo (spinning sensation)
