What is Cialis?
Cialis is a prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (impotence). It contains Tadalafil and was released in Europe in November 2002.
It works in as little as 30 minutes, and the effects last for up to 36 hours, which is much longer than other ED medicines.
It is available in two doses: 10 and 20 mg.
Is Cialis better than Viagra?
Viagra and Cialis tablets belong to the same group of medicines, so they are equally effective. However, Viagra does not last for as long as Cialis. The effects of Viagra last up to 4-6 hours, whilst Cialis lasts for up to 36 hours.
How does Cialis work?
Cialis contains Tadalafil, a type of medicine called a PDE-5 inhibitor (phosphodiesterase type 5). This is a group of medicines that specifically treat erectile dysfunction.
They work by blocking the chemical reaction which prevents blood flow and stops the penis from getting hard. Blocking this reaction helps to promote sustained and prolonged erections.
How effective is it?
Clinical studies show that the Cialis pill is a highly effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.
One study included 160 men. 80 participants took 5 mg of Tadalafil, and the other 80 received a placebo (an inactive substance) for 3 months. After treatment, men had to fill out a questionnaire about their ED.
The men’s erectile function quality was measured using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), a questionnaire that men fill in about their erectile function quality. A higher score (22-25) is classed as no ED.
Before treatment, the men scored 13 (classed as moderate ED). After treatment, men who took Cialis scored 18 on average (mild ED). Those who took the placebo experienced no significant improvement, scoring 15 after treatment.
How long does it take Cialis to work?
Cialis should work in approximately 30 minutes. Therefore, you should allow 30 minutes for the medicine to work before sexual activity.
How long does Cialis last?
The effects of Cialis tablets last up to 36 hours. So Cialis will be effective for sexual activity for up to 36 hours after taking it.
Who can use Cialis?
Most men aged 18 and over can use Cialis. However, if you have a certain medical condition or take certain medications, you should check with your doctor to see if it's safe for you to use.
You cannot use Cialis if:
- you have low blood pressure (below 90 mmHg)
- you have had a heart attack
- you have heart failure
- your doctor has advised you not to have sexual activity
- you have a history of non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION, a condition that causes sudden vision loss due to a lack of blood flow to the optic nerve)
- you have recently had a stroke
- you have unstable angina (a condition which causes chest pain)
- you have an arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat)

Can women take Cialis?
No, women cannot take Cialis. Some women think Cialis may improve their sex drive. Cialis is not licensed for women, and it could be harmful.
What dose should I take?
You should start with the starting dose of 10 mg, unless your doctor advises you otherwise.
You can increase the dose to 20 mg if you find the effects of 10 mg are not enough.
How do I take Cialis?
Take one tablet 30 minutes before sexual activity. Swallow one tablet with a glass of water.
Do not take more than one tablet per day. It will not increase the effectiveness of Cialis and could increase your risk of side effects.
Can I take Cialis 10 mg daily?
The Cialis 10 mg dosage is not recommended for continuous daily use. If you are looking for daily treatment, Cialis is available as Cialis Daily, which contains doses of 2.5 or 5 mg.
Are there any side effects?
Like all prescription medicines, the Cialis pill may cause side effects. The most common side effects should go away on their own once your body gets used to the medicine.
Common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people):

- facial flushing
- stomach discomfort
- headache
- blocked nose (nasal congestion)
- muscle pain
