What is Yasmin?
Yasmin is a combined pill, otherwise known as “the pill”. It was released in the EU in 2000 and has since become a popular and effective contraceptive option.
How does Yasmin work?
Yasmin works in three main ways:
- Preventing ovulation - the process by which the ovary releases an egg each month.
- Thickening the cervical mucus - this makes it harder for semen to enter the cervix and fertilise an egg.
- Thinning the lining of the womb - this makes it harder for an egg to implant into the womb lining if fertilised.
Yasmin contains synthetic forms of female sex hormones: oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progesterone (drospirenone).
These hormones influence these processes, which help to prevent pregnancy.
How effective is it?
Yasmin is over 99% effective when used perfectly every time. However, with typical use, it is 91% effective.
The effectiveness of your contraception can be affected by missing pills. Therefore, you must take Yasmin correctly to make sure it is effective and to reduce the risk of pregnancy.
How long does it take Yasmin to work?
Yasmin is effective immediately if you start taking it:
- days 1-5 of your cycle
- the day after your last active pill, patch or ring (if switching to Yasmin from another contraceptive)
Yasmin will not be effective for at least 7 days if you:
- start taking it on day 6 or after of your cycle
- are switching from a progestogen-only method (e.g. mini-pill, injection, implant or IUD)
You will need to use extra protection (e.g. a condom) for at least 7 days to allow Yasmin to become effective.
Who can use Yasmin?
Most adult women can take Yasmin for contraception.
Some women should not take Yasmin as they are at a higher risk of side effects, including women who:
- have a history or increased risk of blood clots
- have migraine with aura
- have heart or heart rhythm problems
- have high blood pressure
- have breast cancer
- have had a stroke
- are aged 35 years and over and smoke 15 or more cigarettes daily
- are immobile due to a major surgery
If you have any other medical condition or take any other medicine, you should consult your doctor before taking Yasmin.
How do I take Yasmin?
You need to take Yasmin at the same time daily. Each strip contains 21 pills.
You take one pill each day for 21 days (3 weeks). Then, you take a 7-day break, which allows for a withdrawal bleed (a period). After the 7-day break, you start the next strip.
What happens if I miss a pill?
A missed pill is a pill that is more than 24 hours late. The advice for a missed pill will depend on the week.
Missed pill during week 1 (days 1-7):
- The effectiveness of Yasmin may be reduced.
- Take the missed pill as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two at the same time.
- Use extra protection (e.g. a condom) for the next 7 days.
- If you had sex in the 7 days prior to missing a pill, take a pregnancy test as you may be pregnant.
If you miss a pill in weeks 2 or 3, your contraception should not be affected. You should still take the missed pill as soon as possible.

Are there any side effects?
Like all prescription medicines, Yasmin may cause side effects. The most common side effects should go away on their own once your body gets used to the medicine.
Common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people):
- stomach pain
- changes in your breasts
- diarrhoea
- fluid retention
- headaches
- spotting between periods
- mood changes
- feeling sick
- low sex drive
- skin reactions
- vaginal discharge
- being sick
- weight gain
Speak to your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any persistent or serious side effects. If you experience any rare side effects such as blood clots, please seek emergency medical attention.

Can Yasmin delay your period?
You can use Yasmin to delay your period. If you do not want to have a bleed, you can skip the 7-day break and start the next strip as soon as you finish the previous one.
Is Yasmin safe?
Yes, Yasmin is a safe and clinically-proven contraceptive. But if you have another medical condition or take other medication, your doctor will need to ensure it’s safe for you. Our doctors will also know whether it’s safe for you based on your medical questionnaire during the ordering process.
