Vardenafil

Vardenafil is a prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (impotence). It is a generic version of the well-known drug Levitra and became available in Europe in October 2018.

It works in as little as 25 minutes, and the effects last for up to 4-6 hours. It is available in 3 doses: 5, 10 and 20 mg.

Vardenafil is a type of medicine called a PDE-5 inhibitor (phosphodiesterase type 5). This is a group of medicines that specifically treat erectile dysfunction.

They work by blocking the chemical reaction which prevents blood flow and stops the penis from getting hard. Blocking this reaction helps to promote sustained and prolonged erections.

Vardenafil belongs to the same group of medicines as Sildenafil (Viagra) and Tadalafil (Cialis) so they work equally well. However, they have some individual differences such as how long it lasts that may suit your lifestyle. Clinical studies show that Vardenafil is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.

One study included 398 men in Germany and France who took Vardenafil for 6 weeks.

Vardenafil should work in approximately 25-60 minutes. Therefore, you should allow for a minimum of 25 minutes for the medicine to work before sexual activity.

The medicine should then last for up to 4-6 hours.

Most men aged 18 and over can use Vardenafil. However, if you have a certain medical condition or take certain medications, you should check with your doctor to see if it's safe for you to use.

You cannot use Vardenafil if:

• you have low blood pressure (below 90 mmHg)
• you have an inherited retinal disease
• you have had a heart attack
• your doctor has advised you not to have sexual activity
• you have a history of non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION, a condition that causes sudden vision loss due to a lack of blood flow to the optic nerve)
• you have recently had a stroke
• you have unstable angina (a condition which causes chest pain)

Consult your doctor if you are unsure whether any of these conditions apply to you.

You should start with the starting dose which is 10 mg unless your doctor advises you otherwise. You may need to start with the 5 mg dose if you have liver or kidney problems.

You can then lower the dose to 5 mg if the effects of the 10 mg are too strong.

Alternatively, you can increase the dose to 20 mg if you find the effects of the 10 mg are not enough.

Take one tablet 25-60 minutes before sexual activity. Swallow one tablet with a glass of water.

Do not take more than one tablet per day. It will not increase the effectiveness of Vardenafil and could increase your risk of side effects.

Like all prescription medicines, Vardenafil may cause side effects. The most common side effects should go away on their own once your body gets used to the medicine.

Common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people):

• dizziness
• facial flushing
• stomach discomfort
• headache
• blocked nose (nasal congestion)

Speak to your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any persistent or serious side effects. If you experience any rare side effects such as swelling of the face or mouth or difficulty breathing, please seek emergency medical attention.
