What is Elocon?
Elocon is a topical steroid for short-term treatment of severe eczema or psoriasis manufactured by Organon Pharma. Since its approval in the EU in 1997, it has helped many people treat irritation caused by psoriasis, eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions, such as dermatitis. It is available as both a cream and an ointment.
How does Elocon work?
Elocon contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate, which is a moderately potent steroid. It works by blocking the release of chemicals that cause inflammation. This helps to control symptoms of psoriasis and eczema, including itching, irritation and dry scaly skin.
How effective is it?
Studies show that Elocon is an effective treatment for eczema and psoriasis, with a greater anti-inflammatory effect and a lower risk of serious side effects than other steroids.
One clinical trial looked at Elocon treatment in 180 patients with chronic eczema. After 8 days, 78% of patients saw significant improvement in symptoms. Similarly, clinical trials in patients with psoriasis have shown that Elocon significantly improves symptom severity more than other steroid treatments.
How long does it take for Elocon to work?
Your skin should start to feel better after 1 week of using it. But it may take up to 2 weeks to see the full benefits. If your skin does not get better after 2 weeks, you should consult your doctor or dermatologist.
Who can use Elocon?
Elocon is safe to use for most people with eczema or localised psoriasis. To be prescribed Elocon from 121doc, you need to be diagnosed with psoriasis or eczema, and be aged 18 or over. Additionally, this treatment is not recommended for people with:
- acne
- perioral dermatitis (spotty red rash around the mouth)
- widespread plaque psoriasis
- rosacea
- untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin conditions
Women who are breastfeeding can use Elocon, but they should not apply it to their chest to limit the risk of exposure to an infant.
How do I use Elocon?
You apply a thin layer of Elocon once daily in the evening to the affected areas.
Do not apply Elocon more than directed. This will not improve your skin quicker and may cause additional irritation.
Avoid applying it to the eyes, lips and nostrils. Do not apply to irritated, sunburnt or broken skin. You should also not apply Elocon to the genital or anal areas.
How long should I use Elocon?
Elocon is designed to be a short-term treatment, so you may only need it for a few days, or you may need up to 2 weeks. Your doctor or dermatologist will advise you how long to use it. If you are using Elocon on your face, you should use it for no longer than 5 days.
Are there any side effects?
Like all prescription medicines, Elocon may cause side effects. The most common side effects should go away on their own once your body gets used to the medicine.
Common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people):

- irritation
- Itching
- spider veins (telangiectasia)
