How Elleste works
Elleste Solo, Duet and Conti all work by dealing with the causes of symptoms that are associated with menopause, which include hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal itching and vaginal dryness. Patients experience these symptoms because oestrogen levels fall, but taking treatments can stabilise these levels, restoring hormonal balance.
Oestrogen, although helpful, can cause the womb lining to grow uninhibited, increasing the risk of cancer, which is why it's important to use progestogen to monitor this growth if you've not had a hysterectomy. In this case Elleste Duet and Duet Conti are better options.
Who can take it?
Most women can use these treatments safely if a doctor has recommended it to them. Elleste Duet and Conti are better options if you have not had a hysterectomy. Elleste Solo is safe to use without progestogen if you have already had a hysterectomy.
Reasons why your doctor may not have recommended you this medication are: if you've had a history of oestrogen-dependent cancers, you have liver disease; issues with blood clotting or you have or have had breast cancer.
The doses available
Elleste Solo, with just estradiol is available in a 1mg and 2mg dose and, just like with most HRT treatments you'll be started off on the smallest dose. Elleste Solo is also available in a patch form.
Elleste Duet comes in a 1mg dose and 2mg dose. The 1mg pack has 16 white estradiol capsules and 12 green ones. The white ones have just oestrogen and the green ones have a combination of both progestogen and oestrogen. The 2mg pack has 16 orange tablets and 12 grey tablets. The orange tablets contain 2mg estradiol and the grey ones have 2mg estradiol and 1mg norethisterone acetate.
Elleste Duet Conti requires you to take the same tablet for a total of 28 days. Each tablet has 1mg norethisterone ane 2mg estradiol.
How is Elleste taken?
Solo requires you to take the same tablet once a day for 28 days, without a break. Your doctor may prescribe clinical progestogen, to be taken alongside this treatment for 14 days, if you still have a womb.
Duet should also be taken for a total of 28 days without a break between pill packs, but contains 16 oestrogen tablets and 12 progestogen tablets that should be taken in sequence.
Taking Duet Conti is just as straightforward as taking Solo, so the same grey tablet should be taken daily for 28 days, without a break.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are always a risk when taking HRT. Some women may experience changes in mood, nausea, indigestion, fluid retention, leg cramps or acne, which are milder side effects that tend to go away as you become accustomed to the HRT medication. However these side effects shouldn't be a worry if you are using the right treatment and you are visiting a doctor on a regular basis.
Is Elleste available online?
