What is Zoely?

As Zoely is a combined pill, it contains both oestrogen and progestogen, this treatment is slightly more effective than some of the progestogen only mini-pills that are available. It offers almost complete protection against pregnancy.

Zoely is also the first monophasic contraceptive pill to contain a form of oestrogen that is identical to the natural oestrogen that a women produces. How does Zoely work?

This treatment contains both oestrogen and progestogen, which are two female sex hormones that play an integral part in the female reproductive cycle. At a certain point in this cycle, hormone levels change and this causes an egg to be released by the ovaries in a process that is known as ovulation. This medication works to manipulate the menstrual cycle and prevent pregnancy.

  • Zoely makes the body think that an egg has already been released, which has the effect of preventing this from happening.
  • It alters the womb lining, which is where any fertilised eggs would develop. By changing the lining in this way, it becomes incredibly difficult for any eggs to attach there and develop.
  • It also thickens the naturally occurring fluid in the cervix, making it much more difficult for any sperm to travel into the womb and fertilise an egg.

This three-stage approach make this combined contraceptive pill one of the most effective contraceptive methods currently available.

How do you take Zoely?

It is essential that you take each Zoely pill at the correct time. Ideally, you should take your first pill on the first day of your period, which will provide you with immediate protection. If you start using the treatment between day two and day five of your period, you will need to use another form of contraception for the first seven days.

  • You will need to take one active Zoely tablet, which is marked white, each day for 24 days.
  • This is then followed by four yellow pills, which are designed to help you keep track of your treatment and when to start a new pack.
  • You may experience a withdrawal bleed (a period) whilst using the final four yellow pills but you will still be protected against pregnancy.
  • You will be provided with a detailed patient leaflet that will have instructions on how and when to use this medication.

What should I do if a miss a pill?

If you miss taking a pill, take it in the wrong order or take it late, it can impact the effectiveness of Zoely as well as all combined contraceptives.

If you miss a pill, you can take the missed pill as soon as you remember. If it near the time of the other one, missed it out completely and continue the pack as normal. You should still be protected if you only miss one over the course of the 28 days.

If you miss more than one pill, effectiveness will diminish so you will need to use additional barrier contraception for the following seven days. Take the last missed pill as soon as you remember, but don't double dose.

Zoely side effects

Zoely contains an oestrogen substitute that is almost identical to the oestrogen that a woman naturally produces. This means that the side effects this medication can cause are generally much milder if you experience any at all. However, as with all prescription medication, there is a possibility that you may experience certain side effects on very rare occasions. This is particularly likely during the first three months as your body is becoming accustomed to the influx of hormones.

These side effects may include acne, weight fluctuation, headaches and nausea. If you do experience anything that causes you any significant discomfort, you should immediately discuss this with your doctor. You can also contact our Medical team for advice and assistance.

Zoely Precautions

Zoely is suitable for women who are over the age of 18 and who want to use a combined hormonal contraceptive method. There are people who may not be suitable for this medication based on their medical history. You should not use this treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or are over the age of 50. If you are over the age of 50 and have not yet reached menopause, you should speak to your gynaecologist to find the right contraceptive method for you.

You may also not be suitable for Zoely if you have a history of heart problems, liver disease, circulatory issues or severe migraines.
