BMI Calculator

BMI is a measure used by health professionals around the world to determine the ratio of weight in proportion to a person's height. The figure given is then referred to the guide below so that the most effective weight loss strategy can be chosen.

  • Underweight: Below 18.5
  • Normal: 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: 25 to 29.9
  • Obese: 30 and Above

There are a number of health complications that can occur as a result of being overweight and while the BMI scale is not perfect, it does allow a person to gauge their weight category and the potential health risks associated with it.

There are exceptions to BMI being used to determine whether someone falls into a healthy weight category and many athletes who have high muscle mass, for example, will also have a high BMI - this does not necessarily mean that they are overweight. Similarly, pregnant women should not use the BMI calculator to determine their weight category as the BMI guide does not take into account potential additional weight caused by carrying a child. However, the BMI calculator will provide a suitable guide for most people on their weight class and on whether they are a healthy weight or not.

You can find out your BMI by using the calculator below.

If your BMI is high there are a range of options available to you. The first and most important things that you should consider is combining a healthy diet with regular exercise. There is also medication available called Xenical, which can help you lose weight when a change in lifestyle has not delivered the desired results.
