Paludrine & Avloclor is a combination treatment for the prevention of malaria. These treatments work to prevent the spread of the disease in your blood to avoid a full-blown malaria infection. Treatment with this medication usually needs to start before you leave on your travels to ensure that enough of the drug has built up for effective protection. It can be taken as a malaria prevention measure if you are intending to travel to areas where the parasite has not yet become chloroquine resistant.
Avloclor (chloroquine phosphate) attacks the malaria parasite inside red blood cells by affecting the parasite's internal defense mechanism. If the parasite is unable to defend itself, the hemoglobin inside the red blood cells are able to destroy it. Paludrine (proguanil hydrochloride) helps stop an infection from developing by stopping the parasite from multiplying, therefore it can't reach sufficient numbers for the infection to spread and infect new red blood cells.
Paludrine & Avloclor is widely used and safe for most patients over the age of 18, but it may not be advisable if you have epilepsy, liver or kidney problems, you are pregnant or you are breastfeeding. Drug interactions may also occur if this anti-malarial is taken alongside other medications, so make sure that you tell your doctor if you are using any other treatments, if they are not aware of it.
Paludrine and Avloclor should be started seven days before you leave for your destination. You should take two Avloclor tablets once a week and one Paludrine tablet a day after food. Treatment should continue during your entire stay and should be continued for four weeks after you return to ensure that all potential traces of the parasite in your blood have been removed.
It's unlikely that you'll experience side effects, but they are a possibility in people who are sensitive to the active ingredients. The most common effects are mouth ulcers, headaches and stomach upsets. Luckily many of these can be prevented by ensuring that you eat before taking this treatment. However, if these don't pass soon or you start to experience side effects that you find bothersome or worrying, it's better to seek immediate medical help.
