Prempak is a conjugated oestrogen HRT medicine with the addition of progestogen. It's intended to reduce the severity of menopause symptoms associated with a drop in oestrogen, while also maintaining womb health. Taking Prempak can therefore help reduce the occurrence of night sweats, irregular periods, mood swings, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching and hot flushes. Low oestrogen can also greatly enhance a woman's risk of developing oesteoporisis because it causes a drop in bone mass, but taking Prempak early enough can help avoid a drastic loss of bone density.
Prempak C contains conjugated oestrogen, which aims to replace the natural hormone lost when bodily changes happen as a result of menopause. This loss of oestrogen is what causes most of the bothersome and uncomfortable side effects of menopause.
In addition to replacing natural hormone, it also aims to maintain a healthy womb lining by supplying the body with norgestrel, a natural form of progestogen. Progestogen counteracts the effect of oestrogen on the womb lining. This is required because oestrogen can cause the womb lining to grow uninhibited enhancing the possibility of womb cancer developing.
It is prescribed to women who still have a womb and who are experiencing menopause symptoms. You may not have been prescribed this medicine if you are allergic to the hormones in this medication, you have cardiovascular or circulatory issues or you have a history of oestrogen dependent cancers.
This medication comes in two different doses: 0.625mg and 1.25mg. The 0.625mg dose pack has 28 maroon tablets with a 0.625mg dose of conjugated oestrogens (equine) and 12 light brown tablets with 150 micrograms of norgestrel.
The 1.25mg pack comes with 28 yellow tablets each containing 1.25mg of conjugated oestrogens (equine) and 150mcg of norgesterel.
This is an HRT treatment with which you are likely to experience a monthly bleed. This largely has to do with the fact that it contains oestrogen, which needs to be taken at certain points in your cycle.
If you are still menstruating, you should start taking the first tablet on the first day of your period and continue taking the tablets for 16 days. After 16 days the progestogen dose should start and be continued up until day 28 of your cycle. The new pack should then be started straight away.
HRT medications carry a risk of side effects, but this doesn't mean that they should be a concern, especially since your doctor will have to monitor you while you use this treatment. Common side effects may include changes in sex drive, feeling bloated, fluid retention, headaches, indigestion, nausea, acne or backache. These shouldn't be lasting and may just be a sign of your body adjusting to your treatment but you should tell your doctor if they are bothering you or you start to notice anything that's worrying you.
