Its main function is to prevent the production of enzymes by the liver that results in an increase of LDL - ‘bad cholesterol’ – in the blood stream. Cholesterol is continuously transported to and from body cells, but having too much going to cells (LDL) can result in a build-up of fatty deposits known as plaque.
As an additional benefit, Lipitor doesn’t just moderate the production of LDL, but also triglycerides which are other lipids found in the blood. Lastly, it also helps by increasing HDL, which is a lipo-protein that takes excess cholesterol away from cells back to the liver where it can be broken down.
This medication will normally only be prescribed if cholesterol couldn’t be lowered through non-medicinal methods, such as diet and exercise or if your health is at such serious risk that medical intervention is required.
Lipitor will likely not have been prescribed if you are allergic to the active ingredient, atorvastatin or similar compounds, you are a woman and breastfeeding or you have liver or kidney problems. You should also make sure you mention to your doctor if you are taking any other medications.
Lipitor should be taken once a day, preferably at night, as this is when the body produces most of its cholesterol. When you first start taking a medication such as this you’ll most likely be started off on the lowest dose first and if no improvement is noticed within four weeks of use this may be increased to the a higher dose. The doses available are: 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg.
Please note that excess alcohol should be avoided when using Lipitor and that it should never be taken in conjunction with grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
Side effects with this medication aren’t a common occurrence, but some people may be more sensitive to the active ingredients than others. Luckily the majority of side effects commonly experienced are mild and are usually a sign of the body adapting to the treatment. These effects could include headaches, nausea, difficulty sleeping or dizziness. More serious complications are rare and can include allergic reactions, in which case immediate medical attention should be sought.
