COVID-19 update: Our services are running as normal.
It is a statin, so it mainly affects the production of enzymes in the liver, which play an important role in synthesizing LDL. LDL is known as bad cholesterol, because it is being taken to the body cells and if it’s not used, it’s left in the arteries, forming plaque.
Apart from lowering LDL production, Crestor also stimulates production of HDL, which is ‘good cholesterol’, meaning it takes cholesterol away from arteries. It’s also been proven to lower triglycerides, which are general fats that form part of the body’s overall cholesterol count.
Patients will normally be prescribed Crestor if other methods of lowering cholesterol, which may include diet and exercise, were not effective or if a patient is at an elevated risk of complications due to another health condition.
It is not suitable for patients who have a medical condition affecting their liver or kidneys or who are allergic to the active ingredients in this medication. It may also affect or be affected by other medications, particularly those that influence the immune system or blood lipid content.
Cholesterol synthesis is at its most active in the evenings, which is why this treatment should be taken once a day before bedtime. You’ll likely start off by taking the lower dose which is 5mg and may be adjusted to a higher 10mg, 20mg or 40mg dose, if required.
Crestor should not be taken alongside high quantities of alcohol or grapefruit.
Side effects of this treatment aren’t normally serious and may include headaches, insomnia, nausea or dizziness. Luckily these side effects tend to go away as the body starts to adjust to the new treatment. However, if you find that these side effects persist or you experience an allergic reaction or intense muscle pain, you should seek medical help immediately.
