COVID-19 update: Our services are running as normal.
It is an ACE inhibitor which has an effect on a particular enzyme known as ACE. This enzyme is involved in controlling blood pressure by producing angiotensin II, which causes blood vessels to tighten, placing strain on the heart.
By inhibiting the ACE enzyme, angiotensin isn't produced in the same quantities, thereby allowing blood vessels to remain relaxed and widened. This effect isn't permanent, which is why Ramipril is a long-term treatment that should be taken on a daily basis.
Ramipril is a treatment for patients who have hypertension and require additional treatment to help lower their blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to patients who have had a heart attack or who are suffering from kidney problems as a result of diabetes.
Although it is generally well tolerated, there are certain restrictions as to who can take it, so it's important to mention to your doctor if you have any existing health conditions. Your doctor may not prescribe this treatment if you are pregnant or if you have a kidney disease, liver disease or diabetes. You should also exercise caution if you are taking this alongside certain medications, so make a point of telling your doctor if you are taking any other treatments.
Most patients are recommended a single daily dose, but there are cases where a doctor may choose to prescribe a lower dose, but taken twice a day. Your doctor will usually start you off on the lowest dose and then make adjustments if they feel that you aren't getting the required benefit.
Although this treatment is highly effective, it's very important that you still ensure that you eat healthily and do enough exercise to amplify the health benefit you are likely to get from treatment.
In the majority of cases, people who take Ramipril don't experience any side effects. However, it is a prescription treatment and some people may be slightly more sensitive to the active ingredients. Nonetheless, the most commonly experienced side effects include dry mouth, thirst, fever, pale skin, confusion and chest pain. Rare side effects may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting or a spinning sensation.
Speak to your doctor if any of the above mentioned side effects are bothering you or if you start to experience an allergic reaction.
