Bendroflumethiazide, as the name suggests, is a thiazide diuretic, which are treatments known as water tablets. They get their name from the fact that they reduce fluid retention in the body and while treatment for fluid retention can have many benefits, it is also very useful to patients who have high BP.
This medication has an influence on the salt levels in the kidneys which results in more water being drawn from blood when it moves through the kidneys. This results in an increase in fluid leaving the body in the form of urine. If the fluid content in blood is lower, this means that there is less pressure being placed on blood vessels, consequently taking strain off the heart.
It may also have an influence on dilating blood vessels, which is also very beneficial to a patient with hypertension.
Bendroflumethiazide is intended to help patients who need to lower their BP to avoid serious health problems, which may include long term cardiovascular disease. Although thiazide diuretics can be taken by most patients without causing any problems, it's important to ensure that you mention to your doctor if you have any existing conditions or are taking any medications, if they aren't aware of your medical history.
You may not be able to take this mediation if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.
It may also influence your doctors decision to prescribe bendroflumethiazide if you have an existing liver or kidney condition; you have diabetes; you suffer from an adrenal gland disorder or you have a blood disorder such as low potassium or sodium; and if you are currently experiencing problems passing water.
Bendroflumethiazide should be taken first thing in the morning. Your doctor may start you off on the lowest dose of Bendroflumethiazide which is 2.5mg tablets and this may then be increased to 5mg or 10mg, should the results be unsatisfactory. The current maximum daily dose that your doctor can recommend is 10mg. It's important to remember to take your tablets on a daily basis and to avoid doubling up on doses if you forget to take it.
If you suffer from high blood pressure it's always important to use any medication with a high BP-friendly diet.
The vast majority of people who take Bendroflumethiazide don't experience any side effects, but they can occur. The most commonly reported side effects, if they occur at all, may include thirst, muscle cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, high glucose levels or impotence. If any of these side effects are worrying you or if you start experiencing an allergic reaction, you should seek immediate medical help and advice.
