Sleep loss leads to weight gain

Posted in Weight Loss 16 May, 2011

Been busy recently? So busy that you aren’t getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep per night? We can hardly blame you – not many of us can juggle work, family and social commitments with a perfectly routine sleeping pattern. But if you think sleep loss has become a serious long-term problem, just bear in mind that it could have implications beyond what you might think – including for your waistline.

You see, a new study has shown that missing out on shut-eye can shut-down your body’s ability to fend off weight gain. It can affect your metabolism and the rate at which you burn calories. It can also give you higher blood pressure and increases your overall energy expenditure for the day. Essentially, your body adapts to the situation when you miss out on sleep. But this adaption can make it more likely you’ll become obese or overweight.
