What will happen to the ‘home of Viagra’?

Posted in Industry News 09 Mar, 2011

They call it the ‘home of Viagra’. But the research and development centre, run by Pfizer in Sandwich, Kent has meant a lot more than that.

For thousands of people, who live in and around Sandwich, the R&D centre has created jobs. For the scientific community in Britain, it has provided a strong link to the global pharmaceutical industry.

Now Pfizer is pulling out, in a move that Conservative MP Roger Gale says wills “devastate East Kent.” Dr Richard Horton, Chief Editor of British scientific journal, The Lancet, believes that the closure is “a terrible blow, locally and nationally.”

So what will happen next? Today is has been announced that Pfizer has entered talks, with companies who are interested in taking over the site. Among them is the over-50s service provider, Saga. It has also been suggested that multiple, separate, small R&D units could take over the huge space. We will have to wait and see what happens next.
