How does Sildenafil work?
It prevents the action of a chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. This chemical makes the arterial walls in the penis narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow in and initiate an erection. Sildenafil works by relaxing the arteries and increasing the blood flow to the penis.
Although Sildenafil works quickly, in as little as 30 minutes, it will stay in your body for up to 4 hours. This does not mean that you will sustain an erection for this time, just that the drug is still active in your system. Without sexual stimulation from foreplay you will not achieve an erection. It may reduce the recovery time needed before you have sex again.
Dosage Information
Sildenafil comes in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg doses. You will most likely be started at 50mg to see how you handle that dose. Many people remain with that as they respond well to it, but some may need to be increased to 100mg to see an increased benefit from the medication. Conversely, some people will experience side effects and need to be switched to the 25mg dose, although the chance of this is low.
People over the age of 65 will be started on the lowest dosage. Additionally, people with liver or kidney problems, or those with HIV who are on protease inhibitors will also be given the lowest dose.
How to take Sildenafil
It should be taken with a glass of water a minimum of 30 minutes before you have sex. Never take more than one pill in a 24 hour period and always stick to the dosage that was prescribed for you.
Meals high in fat should be avoided as they will reduce the effectiveness of the medication. If a fat-containing meal cannot be avoided, then allow extra time after taking the pill before having sex. Excessive alcohol can also have a negative effect on the body and should be avoided.
If you have recently recovered from a stroke or heart attack then this medication may not be for you. Always tell the doctor about any changes to your health and any other treatment, prescription or over the counter, which you are taking.
Side Effects
Like all prescription drugs, some people may experience some sort of side effect after using this treatment. The most common symptom is a headache but it is possible to experience any of the following:
- Dizziness
- Indigestion
- Facial flushing
- Nasal congestion
- Visual disturbances, such as blurred vision, blue tinge to vision
