This combined oral contraceptive pill contains the active ingredients ethinylestradiol and norethisterone, which are synthetic forms of oestrogen and progestogen. The presence of both these hormones make Binovum one of the most effective contraceptive methods available.
During the female reproductive cycle, the changing levels of hormones are responsible for certain key events occurring. By manipulating the levels of hormones in the blood stream, Binovum offers almost complete protection against pregnancy. One of the main ways that it does this is by tricking the body into thinking that an egg has already been released, which prevents this from happening in the first place.
Binovum also works in a few others ways to prevent pregnancy. It alters the lining of the womb, which is where any fertilised eggs would develop. By changing the lining in this way, it becomes almost impossible for an egg to latch on here and develop. Another way this treatment prevents pregnancy is by thickening the fluids in the cervix, which prevents sperm cells from entering the womb.
As a combined contraceptive pill, Binovum contains both oestrogen and progestogen. This makes it more effective than some of the progestogen only mini pills that are available. This treatment can lead to lighter and less painful periods, meaning it can provide a significant benefit for women who are experiencing painful or heavy bleeds. Binovum also has a reduced risk of some of the potential side effects that can occur from other combined contraceptives.
Binovum can be used by women who are over the age of 18 and who want to use a hormonal contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. There are certain groups who may not be suitable for this medication based on their medical history. It should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This treatment may also not be suitable for women who have high blood pressure, epilepsy, circulation problems and liver problems. If any of these apply to you, please consult with your doctor to find the right contraceptive treatment option for you.
To order this medication, you will be required to complete an online medical consultation. Our doctors will use the answers that you provide to determine whether you are suitable for this contraceptive method. Binovum is a biphasic contraceptive treatment, which means that each packs contains two different types of pills with different hormone dosages. These two tablet forms are colour coded and calendar marked. This treatment consists of a 21-day course, which is followed by a seven-day rest period. You may experience a withdrawal bleed during this rest period but you will still be fully protected. Once this period of time has passed, you should start the next pack of medication even if you are still bleeding.
Ideally, you should start this treatment on the first day of your period, which will provide you with immediate protection. If you start the treatment between day two and day five of your period, you should still be protected although you should consult with your doctor about whether you may need to use an alternative contraceptive method for a short period of time. If you start using Binovum at any other point in your menstrual cycle, you should use an alternative contraceptive method for the first seven days.
We will provide you with a detailed patient leaflet that will have full instructions on how and when to use this medication. You should read this document in full before you start your treatment.
