The older generation may be having better sex lives than couples in their 20s and 30s, according to a leading sex blogger who writes for CNN News.
Ian Kerner says older people may be better mentally equipped to enjoy sex in a richer and deeper way.
Initially, this argument seems to go against our intuitions. Certainly, younger couples are nearer their physical peak. Men find it easier to become aroused and have erections when they are younger; women are likely to become lubricated in seconds.
On the other hand, older men find it harder to have erections, while older women can take minutes to become aroused. However, for younger people “the mind may not be as well developed sexually,” according to Kerner.
He goes on to argue that “slower can actually be better for your sex life. When the physical markers of arousal aren’t instantly obvious, it gives partners more time to play and connect with each other in bed. The behaviours we usually think of as foreplay can become the main event during sex, and give couples the opportunity to rediscover themselves and each other sexually.”
Kerner also points out that older men are more able to appreciate the tender side of sex, as their testosterone levels are likely to be lower.
Erectile dysfunction is most common amongst men aged 40 or above. However, modern medicines mean there is no need for older men to suffer in silence. The impotence drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have all been clinically proven to help men overcome this condition.
