How does Microgynon work?

Microgynon is a monophasic pill, meaning that each pill has the same dose of artificial female hormones in it. The active ingredients act to prevent pregnancy in three ways: stopping ovulation so that no egg is released for fertilisation; thickening the texture of the mucous present in the cervix to the point where a sperm can not reach the womb; and thinning the womb lining so that an egg can not embed itself there to grow.

When can I start taking Microgynon?

You are recommended to start taking this pill on the first day of your period, although you can take a Micorgynon pill as late as day five of your period. But by delaying your dosage it can not guarantee full protection, and you should therefore strengthen your chances of avoiding pregnancy by using an additional method of contraception.

One tablet is taken every day for 21 days and you then have a seven day break from pill-taking. After the seven day break you resume taking the next marked pill in the calendar pack.
