Levonelle one step
Levonelle One Step is more commonly known as the ‘morning after pill’. It’s an emergency contraceptive pill which is effective for up to 3 days (72 hours) after you have had unprotected sex, or if your regular contraceptive has failed. Levonelle is 85% effective at preventing pregnancy; however, it is more effective during the first 24 hours. Levonelle is suitable women who are over the age of 18.
Levonelle One Step is 95% effective if taken during the first day after unprotected sexual intercourse. It is 85% effective if taken between 25 - 48 hours after unprotected sex, but this drops to 58% effectiveness if taken between 49 - 72 hours after intercourse. Levonelle One Step is safe for most women to take, and can only cause mild side effects.
Although it’s a clinically proven form of contraception, it’s still not fully understood how Levonelle One Step works. It’s thought to work by preventing ovulation and fertilisation, and by altering the lining of the womb, depending on what stage of the menstrual cycle you are at. Levonelle stops pregnancy before it can take place. If you have already become pregnant, Levonelle will not be effective.

If you are already taking a regular form of contraceptive you should continue to use it. An emergency contraceptive can only be used once every menstrual cycle; we recommend using a barrier contraceptive to ensure against further pregnancy during this period.
Are there any Levonelle side effects?
Levonelle can cause a few mild side effects, the most common one being nausea. Less common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, stomach pains, diarrhoea, feeling dizzy or feeling tired. Your period may also come later after taking Levonelle, and could cause some spotting or bleeding before your next period.
