How does Cerazette work?

The Cerazette contraceptive pill works to prevent pregnancy in two ways. As with the combined oral contraceptive pill, Cerazette prevents eggs from ripening in the ovaries. This contraceptive also thickens the mucus at the entry to your womb, which makes it difficult for sperm to penetrate and reach an egg for fertilisation to take place.

When can I start taking Cerazette?

Take the first Cerazette pill on the first day of your period for immediate protection. Some women choose to take Cerazette on days 2–5 of their period, but an additional barrier method of contraception must also be used for the first 7 days of tablet taking.

Try to settle into a routine of taking your pill at around the same time each day, in the morning or in the evening after brushing your teeth. If you miss taking a pill, or take your pill more than 12 hours late, then you may not still have full protection against pregnancy.

When you complete a strip of pills start your next strip straight away. If you do not start a new strip of pills then you will not be protected against pregnancy.

What precautions should be taken?

Its important to know that not all women can take the Pill. Cerazette may not be prescribed to you if any of the following conditions affect you:

• If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
• Thrombosis - the formation of a blood clot in a blood vessel
• Jaundice or severe liver disease and your liver is still not working normally.
• Unexplained vaginal bleeding.

You should also inform the doctor if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or any type of cancer before using Cerazette. If the doctor feels that any of the above health issues are cause for concern, an alternative branded mini pill may be suggested.

Are there side effects?

This pill is a popular choice of contraception for many women, although there is a small possibility that side effects will affect some users. Reported side effects by women who have used Cerazette include:

• Acne
• Breast pain
• Headache
• Mood changes
• Nausea
• Weight gain
